Canada’s Historic Places

A Federal, Provincial and Territorial collaboration, it is Canada's definitive source of information on historic places with more than 13,000 entries.

Canadiana Online

The Canadiana collections are the largest online collections of early textual Canadiana in the world. The site is comprised of Canadian monographs, periodicals, government publications, newspapers and annuals that amount to over 19 million pages.

Find a Grave

The world’s largest gravesite collection, these records are also available in Ancestry, but this website is accessible online without needing a subscription.

Historical Niagara

Local historian Dave Bennison creates frequent posts about historical Niagara sites on this Facebook page with over 18,000 followers.

Niagara History and Trivia

A public group of over 37,000 members on Facebook, the Niagara History and Trivia group is active daily, seeing its members sharing photos and memories. You can join the group to request photos and create discussions.

Ontario Land Registry Access

Ontario Land Property Records portal, can be searched for house and property history. There is a fee when requesting maps and documents.

A Welland-focused website created by two local historians.

Canadiana Héritage

The sister site of Canadiana Online, the Héritage collection was developed in partnership with Library and Archives Canada and the Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN). It includes 900 collections of 41 million pages of archival materials. The Héritage collection includes scans of microfilm taken from some of Library and Archives Canada's most sought-after archival collections.

Digital Archive Ontario

A free database of digital material held by Toronto Public Library including archival photos, maps, postcards, video interviews, blog posts by specialist librarians and much more. The database includes information about the City of Welland and the Welland Canal.

Heritage Welland

The volunteers on the Heritage Advisory Committee advise Welland City Council on matters related to the Ontario Heritage Act and properties of cultural heritage value the City could protect.

Library and Archives Canada

Provides digital access to government records, books, images and more. Searches here can be used in conjunction with the Canadiana Héritage site listed above, which provides online access to digitized microfilm from Library and Archives Canada.

Ontario Ancestors Niagara Peninsula Branch

Requires membership to access most content. Has over 400,000 records from various local collections and registers.

The Canadian County Atlas Digital Project

An index of landowner names that appeared in the Ontario County Atlases, published between 1874 and 1881. This includes “Illustrated Historical Atlas Of The Counties Of Lincoln And Welland, Ontario.” This atlas, and many of the other Ontario atlases indexed in the site below, can be found in our local history collection.
